Detto 0.5.0-beta.42

Released: 2026-09-08

• The person on the other side gets their name even without an AI provider: when there is one other voice and you greet exactly one name — “Ciao Francesco!” — that voice is Francesco. With two voices or two greeted names nothing is guessed. The AI naming pass also gets more time to answer, and the diagnostic log now says when it was skipped or why it failed.
• Accurate after, light during: on PCs with the “small” model installed and at least four cores, the minutes transcribed live with the light model are transcribed once more with the better one when the call ends, in the background. The live call stays as light as before.

• Calls are transcribed in the language actually spoken, minute by minute. beta.39 had used the interface language as the starting assumption, and an English interface forced English onto an Italian call — whisper forced into the wrong language translates instead of transcribing. The interface language no longer reaches the decoder at all: every minute is decoded in the language whisper hears in it when it is sure, otherwise in the language the call has mostly been in; a call that switches from Italian to English follows the switch.

• The Calls page has the “Record calls automatically” switch right next to Record now, so nobody has to click Record at every meeting. Automatic recording now starts whenever a call is present — also when the switch is flipped mid-call — and a call you stopped by hand stays stopped until it is over.
• The Record now button lost its orange dot; the label sits centred.

• The language of a call is no longer decided by its first minute. A half-hour Italian call came back entirely in Spanish because the opening minute — greetings and noise — was read as Spanish and then imposed on everything. Now the caller’s own language is assumed from the start, whisper’s detection is consulted minute by minute, and the language is settled only once it has won two confident minutes (or four in total); minutes decoded under the earlier assumption are decoded again.
• Call transcripts no longer contain what whisper writes when it hears nothing — “[Music]”, “(whispers)”, “[INAUDIBLE]”, subtitle credits — nor a sentence repeated for minutes on a silent microphone: non-speech tokens are suppressed at the decoder, the decoder no longer conditions on its previous text, and repeats are dropped.
• Fewer imaginary participants: a voice has to speak for at least eight seconds to count as a person, and when the clustering still finds more than six voices it is repeated with a looser threshold.

• Same content as beta.37, which never reached the update channel: a build check compared line endings and failed on the Windows build machine. The check now ignores them.

• Calls stay light while you are in them: the live transcription now uses one to three threads at the lowest process priority and the light model, so sharing your screen never stutters; once the call ends the remaining minutes are decoded at full speed.
• Voices are told apart. After a call, a speaker-diarization pass on the other side’s audio separates the people who spoke, so “Person 1” and “Person 2” are assigned by voice, and a name revealed in the conversation attaches to the right voice.
• Offline cleanup: on PCs with at least 8 GB of RAM and 4 cores, Settings can download a small language model (1.1 GB) that cleans dictated text on this computer — punctuation, fillers, casing — with the same anti-paraphrase guard as the cloud.
• First-run setup starts by asking your language, in six languages with large tiles, and every step is shorter and animated; the “What’s new” panel is clearer too.
• The update card in the pill is now a compact card beside the pill on the side docks — no more tall narrow bar — with a download bar and a restart countdown, and the same look on the bottom dock.
• The installer no longer makes the mouse stutter after Start: payload extraction and the launch of the setup run off the interface thread, and the artwork is decoded once at the size it is shown.
• The dashboard got a consistency pass: one card radius and shadow, one heading scale, one button style, visible focus rings for keyboard users, tidier empty states.

• A call recording no longer ends after the first minute. The recording stopped as soon as the browser window title lost the word “Meet” for a minute, which is exactly what happens when you switch tabs to show something. The title no longer decides: while someone is still talking the recording continues, and it ends only after the window has been gone and nobody has spoken for two minutes, or when you press Stop.
• The transcript now tells the other participants apart: names when the conversation reveals them, otherwise “Person 1”, “Person 2”… numbered by first appearance, instead of a single “Them”.
• Timestamps in call transcripts are real again — every line had started at 0:00 — and the language is detected once, on the first minute, then held for the whole call, so a quiet minute can no longer come back in another language.

• The News page inside Detto and the “What’s new” panel shown after an update now describe the latest releases — calls, offline dictation, project-aware tasks and the pill fixes — in all six languages. They had stopped at beta.21.

• Calls. Detto notices a Google Meet, Zoom, Teams, Webex or Discord call and shows a discreet badge on the pill; hover it and click Record. Your microphone and the call audio are captured as two separate tracks and transcribed on this PC with the offline model, minute by minute while the call goes on, so the text is nearly ready when it ends. Only the transcript is kept; the audio is deleted.
• The transcript says who speaks. Your lines carry your name; the other side gets the names the conversation itself reveals — “Good morning Francesco” / “Good morning Matteo” — inferred once at the end by the cleanup provider, never invented.
• A new Calls page in the dashboard lists every call with its status, shows the conversation as a chat with names and timestamps, and lets you copy or delete it. Settings → Calls: detection on/off, record automatically without asking, keep the audio.
• Requires the offline model (Settings → Offline model); nothing about a call leaves the computer, except the first lines of the transcript sent once to the cleanup provider to name the speakers when one is configured.

• Dragging the pill answers at once. A press held for longer than a click already grows the drag surface while the pointer is still, the first movement is followed from 3 px instead of 7, start and expansion travel in a single round trip, and the follower is twice as quick. A held press released without moving puts everything back and the click goes through.
• On the side docks the recording and locked pills are taller, so the grip dots no longer crowd the spectrum and the confirm button.

Detto 0.5.0-beta.32

• Fixes beta.31, which failed at startup on every installation with “Cannot find module ./stt-local”: the two modules introduced in that release were missing from the list of files the installer packs. If Detto no longer opens, download this build from the website; the built-in updater cannot run from an app that does not start.
• A build check now walks every module the app requires and refuses a package list that leaves one out, so this cannot ship again.

• Dictation now works without any API key: a pinned whisper.cpp runtime ships with Detto and a quantised model downloads once, verified by digest — the light one on a 4 GB, two-core laptop, the more accurate one on stronger machines. With a key the cloud comes first and the offline model is the safety net; “Offline first” in Settings inverts the order, and setup offers “Continue without a key”.
• Voice tasks understand projects. The model receives your projects and open tasks and answers with typed commands: “for Tracking I need to do A, B and C” lands in Tracking if it exists — even dictated in lowercase or misspelt — and creates it if it does not. Only when two existing projects are genuinely close does the pill ask which one, instead of dropping the task silently.
• Moving the pill from the top or bottom edge to a side no longer flashes it in the top-left corner: the lateral layout cancelled the drag transform for one frame. The harness now asserts the transform never disappears and no frame lands in the corner.
• The top and side docks show the same timer and live spectrum as the bottom dock; on the sides the spectrum runs vertically.
• Updates: the check triggered by a licence activation waits for the authenticated feed instead of hitting a public one with the device token attached; a failed background check retries after five and fifteen minutes; a rejected token is renewed once; the stable build now verifies the signature of the installer it downloads before running it. The dismiss button says what it always did: “Install on next launch”.
• Lighter package: the Anthropic SDK is gone, replaced by a single request with the same timeout.

• The “Free trial” card no longer appears on a paid licence. A style rule gave those panels an explicit display, which overrode the hidden attribute: they stayed on screen showing the placeholder text written in the page — “14 days left” on an account that had bought Detto weeks earlier.
• The trial counter now behaves exactly as intended: it runs while the trial lasts, stays at zero once it ends with the account still connected, and disappears for good the moment the licence is paid.
• A build check now verifies that every panel the app hides can actually be hidden, so a stylesheet change cannot silently bring these ghost cards back.

• Three trial bugs fixed. Detto no longer signs you out when the trial ends: your account stays connected and the app offers to buy, with a Buy button right in the account section.
• Switching to a purchased account no longer leaves the old “Free trial” card behind — the trial state is now cleared whenever the account changes.
• Connect account works again after an abandoned sign-in. The activation window used to leave the dashboard waiting forever, which made the button do nothing until a restart.

• When a free trial ends, Detto no longer signs you out. Your account stays connected, the app tells you the trial is over and takes you straight to the purchase — instead of asking you to sign in again to a account you never left.
• Buy the licence and everything comes back on its own: dictation, and any updates released while the trial was over, checked for immediately rather than at the next hourly round.

• During the free trial Detto now shows how many days are left, in the sidebar where weekly progress usually sits and next to your account. Before, it said “Lifetime license” to everyone.
• Nothing is locked during the trial: every feature is available, and the countdown turns red in the last three days.

• Detto can now be tried free for 14 days. Create an account, download, dictate — no card, and after fourteen days it stops and you decide.
• If your trial ends, Detto now says so and points you to the purchase instead of asking you to connect an account you already have.

• The dashboard now reopens at the size and position you left it. If you had it on a screen that is no longer connected, it comes back visible instead of somewhere you cannot reach.
• The diagnostic log no longer asks the disk about itself on every line. It was two synchronous calls per entry on the process that handles your shortcuts, and during a dictation there are many entries.

• Detto now saves the last dictation to your history even if you quit the moment it finishes. Writing the history off the main thread made it faster but asynchronous, and that was one consequence too many.
• Widened the safety limit that hands your shortcut back when something hangs, so it can no longer interrupt a dictation that was simply slow.

• The destination window title is sent to the cleanup provider again, because it is the clearest hint about where your text is going. The new Settings switch stays, so you can turn off that one thing without losing the rest.
• Update checks now run once an hour instead of every fifteen minutes. Detto still checks at launch and whenever you open the dashboard, so nothing arrives later than before in practice.

• Snippet expansions are no longer sent to the text cleanup provider: they are substituted on your computer before anything leaves it. The window title is still sent, because it tells the cleanup where you are writing, but Settings can now switch that off on its own.
• A transcription that fails for a network or provider reason no longer costs you the recording: it is kept in memory for a few minutes and the bubble offers to send it again.
• Detto no longer waits on a cleanup provider that never answers, and releases the hotkey instead of leaving dictation silently unavailable.
• Fixed the bubble jumping to a corner and back when a drag starts or ends, and stopped a dictation started right after a drag from losing its recording indicator.
• The vocabulary hint sent to the speech model is now written in the language you dictate, instead of always in Italian.
• Long dictations keep their paragraph breaks, and the cleanup no longer runs out of room on long structured text.
• Settings can export your dictionary, snippets, learned corrections and to-dos to one file, and import one by merging it with what you already have.
